Accountability Act Could Hobble Charities And Small Interest Groups, Public Affairs Organization Fears

TORONTO – In a presentation to a Senate Committee, Elaine Flis, President of the Public Affairs Association of Canada (PAAC), warned that new and onerous rules on lobbying may not be affordable to smaller interests. The Act should spell out rules that apply equally to corporations, NGOs, charities and unions, but which will not have the effect of curtailing advocacy on behalf of the latter organizations, Flis told the Committee on Wednesday. Requirements which larger companies can afford and small organizations cannot unfairly punish the smaller.

Public Affairs Industry Welcomes Accountability Laws, But Could Accountability Act Restrict Free-Flow Of Information?

TORONTO – Canada’s largest public affairs industry association is extending qualified support to the Harper government on the introduction of its Federal Accountability Act, while also extending a helpful hand to make the legislation better.

Yesterday at its Annual General Meeting, the Public Affairs Association of Canada (PAAC) adopted a comprehensive Statement of Ethical Principles.

TORONTO – “Public affairs, including lobbying, is an important part of the democratic process,” said Chris Benedetti, Past President of PAAC. “The majority of people who practice public affairs act in a professional and ethical manner. They help make policies better and build public awareness around important issues of the day. The Statement of Ethical Principles helps define what most practitioners already do, but it also provides a viable, identifiable guidepost.”
