Why Public Affairs Matters More Than Ever
By Nicole Brassard and Nikki Hill, Co-Presidents, Public Affairs Association of Canada, BC Chapter
In a moment defined by economic uncertainty, rapid policy change, and rising public expectations, the need for meaningful dialogue between government and industry has never been greater. Yet too often, and we’ve seen this, when two well meaning parties enter the room, the dialogue is reactive or the consultation is last minute. We make sure the right people are in the right rooms to inform the best policy.
It is a core focus of all of us at PAAC.
In a capacity stretched environment, we are constantly monitoring developments across sectors and jurisdictions, helping to bridge the gaps that can emerge from sometimes siloed discussions within government and ensuring a more connected, informed decision-making process.
At its best, public affairs is not about advocacy. It is about connection. It is about creating space for informed, constructive exchange between those who design policy and those who live with its impacts every day.
Government does not operate in a vacuum. Nor does industry.Policy decisions reverberate through supply chains, labour markets, and communities and without a clear line of sight between these perspectives, we risk policies that are either disconnected from implementation realities or insufficiently ambitious to meet the moment.
In this environment, the cost of misalignment is high.
As practitioners, we’re responsible for elevating the dialogue, offering clear, credible counsel, and helping shape policy that serves the public interest. In a time when the stakes are high and the path forward is complex, that role is not just valuable. It is indispensable.
As we near the annual general meeting for PAAC BC on June 4, 2026, we encourage public affairs practitioners to get involved with our board and organization at this critical time in the sector.
